This is going to be an ongoing post about user experience tidbits I've been thinking about. This are generally opinion pieces so take it easy.
Filenames - I've been wondering if people still try to use small filename sizes. I remember the 8.3 days when naming conventions were pretty rigid or problems happened on the system. When the names and extension size restrictions were lifted way back in the early 90's people didn't start using long filenames out of habit I suspect. But here we are in the 2010's and most of the filenames I use and see are still relatively small. I remember seeing examples of long filenames back when they were first introduced:
employee attendance report for May 1995.doc.
sales forecast for September 1998 in Bermuda.xls
And the same applies with folder names. But I still find myself using short versions of any file I name. Such as:
So is this because smaller = more efficient or because of old habits or because I'm using a standard that is engrained in my brain?
I found this thing after being so frustrated with typical body "puffs" that fall apart after repeated use. And their plasticky feel never seemed to truly "scrub" my skin. These puffs by The Crown Choice are indestructible relative to the others. They are made like a donut, and there's a soft scrub side and a hard scrub side (color is used to distinguish the hard side). They come with a loop of nylon to hang them up which I've yet to see break. I've used one of these in over a year and only started using another because I felt like I should, not because it stopped doing its job.
The donut shape makes them easy to hold or hang if you prefer to not use the nylon strip. Highly recommended if you use this sort of thing.
I like how they approached this design - I think they looked at the pain points with existing puffs:
Not easy to hold
Don't really "scrub" you skin, they just push lather around
Fall apart after not too many uses - even the higher quality ones fail eventually
The hanging string or ribbon rots, comes untied, or falls off too easy
Then they added some advantage features:
Donut shape makes it easier to hold and hang
Added a two phase abrasive quality to the material with color that fades after a LOT of use to let you know it's been sometime since you changed it (this could be the only way they put in some form of obsolescence so you would think about replacing it)
